Artist Family Guest over Christmas: “You’re Crazy!”How My New Film Pushes the Process.

I’ve always noticed that I gravitate to rough art, impressionistic, texture, without lines. Often without detail. Only using light and contrast to define the landscape, people etc. Then I heard an artist say, “There are no black lines in art!”. So true. It’s only a play of light and dark. Like life.

I began thinking that in my films, I’ve only animated with black lines around my characters and props. Occasionally, for effect, using self-colored lines. I tested with some new painterly methods for Odin, and found that I really liked them, and liked the look, but the process is much more involved. Every frame of new color is almost like painting and art directing on my micro/macro-scale.

Crazy? Yes. Time-consuming, yes. My new direction?

Yes.
